Writing letters to your legislators can be a wonderful tool in helping to influence their votes on issues that are important to you and your family. Below is a letter sent to one legislator asking him to sign on to the Family Opportunity Act of 2000, SB 2274. He received several letters around the same time on this issue and signed onto the bill in mid July. When sending letters do not send a form letter you have copied. Add your own voice and information. Make the letters personal but not overemotional. Handwritten letters are more personal though type written is also fine. A single page is best, two pages at the most. You can make a difference by making your voice heard.

Dear (Senator/Representative NAME),
I am writing to request your support for the Family Opportunity Act of 2000. As the parent of a child with a disability, who falls in the middle to upper middle class category, I know the difficulties that families can face when trying to obtain services for their children.
My family, and many like mine, would welcome the opportunity to buy into the Medicaid program. Insurance seldom sufficiently covers many of the therapies our children need. Passage of SB 2274 could helpl ease some of the barriers families face to healthcare for their children with disabilities. It could also help ease some of the monetary stress on our family and many others.
Please sign on to support SB 2274 and encourage your colleagues to do the same. It is time that these families, who have been overlooked in the past, have an option for their children and families. Thank you in advance for your support on FOA 2000.
Sincerely,
